Peter O'Mahony: 'I've been a long time waiting for it'

Munster captain Peter O'Mahony was lost for words after his side ended their 12-year wait for silverware by winning the BKT United Rugby Championship title.

The province continued their late-season surge to pull off another memorable away win, 19-14 against the Stormers, and become champions for the first time since 2011.

Having led 12-7 at half-time, they found themselves trailing by two points heading into the final five minutes after Deon Fourie's second-half try for the Stormers, but John Hodnett's late score, converted by Jack Crowley, saw Munster snatch a deserved title.

"I can't really believe it to be honest with you," O'Mahony told TG4.

Having been part of the wider squad when Munster last tasted success in 2011, this was O'Mahony's first time winning a title with the province on the pitch.

"I've been a long time waiting for it. Happy days!"

For much of the season, Munster's title-prospects seemed slim as they endured a difficult start to the campaign, but some incredible late-season form saw them go unbeaten in five consecutive away games up to and including the final in South Africa.

"We've been on the road a lot, and I think it stood to us," he said.

"We've worked hard, we've ground out serious victories that we've gone down from, like the Sharks away from home when we drew. That stood to us, and unbelievable balls in the second half to put in that performance."

Hodnett (above) was named player of the match after his title-winning try, justifying his selection having been picked in the starting team ahead of RG Snyman.

And the flanker agreed with O'Mahony's assessment that their run of away games to the final has brought them closer together.
