Peter Canavan: Kerry must avoid Red Hand pitfalls

RTÉ Sport analyst Peter Canavan has warned that Kerry must avoid falling into the same trap that Tyrone did during their hugely unsuccessful Sam Maguire defence in 2022.

The Red Hands had a mediocre league campaign last year with their Division 1 safety not assured ahead of their final round game against the Kingdom.

They won that fixture and were expected to be a much stronger force in the championship, but they had their hands easily prised off the cup following heavy defeats to Derry and Armagh, after opening up with an Ulster preliminary round win over Fermanagh.

Kerry are tracking Tyrone's 2022 campaign with their first five league games resulting in just four points - Tyrone had three at that stage - and Canavan said that there’s no guarantee that everything will sort itself out in time for the summer after their latest defeat to the Red Hands in Omagh on Sunday.
