Perth boxer Luke Bibby wins gold at GB Elite Three Nations Championships

Buzzing Luke Bibby has been crowned the best of British.

The Perth boxer recorded his most impressive result to date by winning gold at the GB Elite Three Nations.

Held in Cardiff, the 21-year-old, representing Scotland, defeated England’s Louie O’Doherty on Sunday.

Perth Railway Boxing Club member Bibby was competing in the 63.5kg light welterweight class.

He was rightly proud and “absolutely buzzing” with his performance.

“I’d had a broken thumb and literally took it out the cast 10 or so days ago,” he smiled. “But I got straight back into it.

“The semi-final was a comfortable performance and that set me up perfectly for the final.

“It was going to be a harder fight and the first round was a bit slow. I think he edged it.

“But I started to outwork him and won the fight by unanimous decision.

“You can easily get over excited and sometimes I can get too energetic early on.

“But you need to relax and I’m experienced enough now to know what works for me.

“I always feel that, on my day, I can beat anyone. I’ve been performing all year and this has capped it off.

“The feeling of getting my hand raised this time tops any other time. This is my biggest win to date.

“It gives me so much more confidence.”

Bibby was quick to thank everyone back home in Perth who has supported him on his boxing journey so far.

“I’ve had about a million folk messaging me,” he said after stepping out of the ring.

“All the support is brilliant and everyone from Perth gets behind me.

“It spurs me on and I know they are watching. I had to dig deep but I got it done and I’m over the moon.”

Despite a busy schedule, there is always time to get in touch with coaches and key figures at Perth Railway Club.

“I always talk to the guys at Perth Railway Club,”
