Pep Guardiola warns Man City over Manchester United after De Bruyne and Haaland masterclass

Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City's emphatic win over Luton will have no bearing on their fortunes in Sunday's derby with Manchester United.

City scored six against Luton in the FA Cup to ease into the quarter-finals, with De Bruyne setting up Haaland for four goals, before Haaland ended the night on five strikes and Mateo Kovacic added gloss to the scoreline. The sight of De Bruyne and Haaland linking up again is an exciting one for City fans - especially with United and their makeshift defence up next.

But Guardiola was keen to remind his players that the performance at Luton will not be replicated against United, as he heaped praise on his deadly partnership at Kenilworth Road.

"Erling needs a guy with the vision, quality, generosity," Guardiola said. "Kevin is a less selfish player, if he cannot score another one he can do it [assist]. Kevin needs the movement for Erling. Kevin with Erling was great but everyone makes their contributions."

Asked if the return of De Bruyne's link-up with Haaland helps City's daunting fixture list of United, Liverpool and Arsenal in the next three Premier League games, Guardiola dismissed the idea that they will be able to pick up where they left off this weekend. He also confirmed that he gave no thought to the United game when keeping Haaland on the pitch until the 74th minute.

"[United is] a completely different game. Today they play in a completely different game, it's another game the way they attack will be completely different," the manager replied.
