Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden shares Bernardo Silva quality at Man City

Pep Guardiola thinks that Phil Foden thrives more than most in the biggest games of the season.

The Manchester City youngster bagged a hat-trick in the derby demolition of United at the weekend to build on his start to the campaign. Even when he wasn't in top form in the first few games, Guardiola kept him in because of the qualities he brings to the team and has seen him flourish in the last few matches.

Foden's form makes it very easy for Guardiola to keep him in the team, and Kevin De Bruyne is among those who believes the Stockport star will eventually be moulded into a star central midfielder. City's manager thinks he needs a little more patience before he can thrive in the middle, but likened him to Bernardo Silva for his ability to shine on the biggest stages.

"The impact from Phil when I arrived was 'wow'. Even the second season he started to play in important games," said Guardiola.

"He doesn't feel the pressure, a bit like Bernardo [Silva] the bigger the stage he plays better. You saw the assist from Erling [Haaland], he started from our box and is able to make transitions box to box.

"He can do it but in smaller spaces is good, he can go to the byline or arrive to the box and shoot. As a striker he has the movements in behind and can play false nine. he can do many many things. I would say every year the more games you play you are a better player."
