Pep Guardiola's transfer market struggles could see Man City abandon width for good next season

It's safe to say Pep Guardiola has done little wrong at Manchester City since arriving in 2016.

He's won every trophy there is to win - and could add two more new cups to City's collection next season - and has another two years to cement his status as the world's best manager. Where Guardiola leads, others follow, with the majority of English football now building from the back as Guardiola pioneered in Barcelona, developed in Munich, and perfected in Manchester.

If there was to be one criticism of Guardiola's time at City, however minor, it would be the long-term struggle to sign good full-backs.

Only Kyle Walker, who signed in Guardiola's second summer, has been an undeniable success among the six full-backs who have arrived since 2016. This summer, City may end up with no full-backs at all, as Guardiola seems to be evolving away from relying on wide defenders.

Under Guardiola, City have signed Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo, Angelino, Joao Cancelo and Sergio Gomez. Of those, Walker has become arguably the Premier League's best right-back, but could be set to suffer from City's struggles to sign any other long-term full-back options.

Danilo and Mendy were promising for a time, but injuries and form meant both couldn't be relied on to lock down the position. Angelino flattered to deceive as a back-up and left as soon as he was re-signed, while Gomez has shown promise but needs improvement. Cancelo was world-class for two seasons after a slow start to life in Manchester, although his acrimonious loan exit in January could see him leave permanently this summer.
