Pep Guardiola reacts to emotional Man City and Everton show of support for Ukraine

Pep Guardiola thanked Everton and his own Manchester City players and supporters for their show of unity for Ukraine.

Both clubs had a Ukrainian player on the subs' bench, with Aleks Zinchenko for City and Vitali Mykolenko for Everton, and both teams wore Ukraine colours as support for their country and for their teammates.

Zinchenko and Mykolenko were both in tears as supporters showed their appreciation - and City fans waved two Ukraine flags and had a message for Russian premier Vladimir Putin.

Said Guardiola : "I said on behalf of Manchester City thank you so much for the lovely gesture for Aleks and their player and the concern that happened.

"The concern is all around the world and I'm pretty sure the UK showed what a strange situation it is when people send innocent people that don't hate each other in Ukraine and Russia to kill each other because one guy at home decides to do it.

"Hopefully it can be resolved soon and there are no more victims in this conflict."

The emotional scenes before the game seemed to spill over into the game as Everton were aggressive and passionate from the off, while City failed to establish their usual control.

Normal service was resumed in the second half as City stepped it up, Everton tired and Phil Foden grabbed a vital three points.
