Pep Guardiola gives Jack Grealish home truth about title glory as Man City gear up for final Premier League push

Pep Guardiola has told Jack Grealish to enjoy the moment if he wins his first major title on Sunday - but warned that the euphoria does not last long. The £100million record buy from Aston Villa will get a Premier League winner’s medal if Manchester City beat his former team in the season finale at the Etihad Stadium.

And that will bring instant reward for Grealish ’s decision to stop being the biggest fish in the Villa pond and fight it out with world-class talents for a place in the ultra-successful Blues team. But Guardiola, who won six league titles as a player and so far has nine as a a manager, said that he should savour the moment if City do win but then have to be prepared for the consequences.

Grealish’s career-high to date was helping Villa to the 2019 play-off final victory that saw them back into the Premier League, and Guardiola said he understood why the player might be relishing the possibility of the winning moment on Sunday more than most. He said: “I’m pretty sure, for Aston Villa he helped them be promoted - maybe that’s his biggest title and then remaining in the Premier League, second one exceptional.

“For him to have never won a Premier League, it’s so exciting. The day after, we’ll be happy if we have won. But my advice is to try to be happy playing football, this is more important than winning titles. You feel alone after two or three days. That’s all? All the effort for that?

“Having it on your CV is good but no more than that. It’s magnificent and then you defend over a year being a champion. Someone has to take us out.”
