Pep Guardiola challenges Man City fan and more moments missed in Newcastle United win

Manchester City have won their second game of the season against Newcastle United.

It's been a busy week for City who were in Athens on Wednesday lifting the Super Cup and were straight back into action as they welcomed a dangerous Newcastle to the Etihad. The match appeared to be a potential banana skin given City would be running on fumes and the Magpies won 5-1 last weekend but it didn't prove to be the case.

Though it was only a narrow 1-0 scoreline, Pep Guardiola's side dominated the match with Phil Foden shining in a central role. If Erling Haaland had his shooting boots on, Foden would have had a hat-trick of assists.

Instead, it was just the one as he teed up Julian Alvarez to score his excellent opener from the edge of the box and the first-half goal was the difference.

Why Laporte was not involved

Aymeric Laporte was not in the squad for the match even though, unlike Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Bernardo Silva, he is not injured or ill.

There was real clarity on the centre-back's whereabouts, though. It appears he will be leaving City following the accepted bid from Al Nassr after not being selected but there was no talk of an imminent move being the reason he wasn't in the squad.

It seems Laporte has joined Joao Cancelo in being trimmed from the squad ahead of an expected departure.

Treble-winners welcomed

The match was the first time City had played at home since they lifted the Premier League title against Chelsea a week before last season ended. Quite a lot has happened since, notably, an FA Cup and Champions League win to complete a historic treble.
