Pep Guardiola backs Man City ace to regain first XI place as Erling Haaland unhappiness laid bare

Here are your Manchester City headlines for Tuesday, October 4.

Haaland's mentality perfectly summed up

Erling Haaland might have scored a record-breaking hat-trick for Manchester City, plus providing two assists, but he was still unhappy with his teammates after the game.

That is according to left-back Sergio Gomez, with the Spaniard revealing how Haaland's mentality ensured he still had reason to complain on a fine afternoon for City. Gomez also told reporters how Haaland does 'even more spectacular' things in training for City than he has managed in games, where he has 17 goals and three assists in 11 outings for the Blues.

"He doesn't settle for one goal, he wants to score the second or third, he wants more. The other day in the derby, after we conceded the third goal he was a little bit angry because he wanted more, he wanted a clean sheet, so it's important to learn that hunger and ambition he has."

Winger told what he has to do to get back into contention

Riyad Mahrez must improve his physical condition if he wants to get back into the Manchester City team, according to boss Pep Guardiola.

Mahrez was on the bench again for Sunday's win over Manchester United and has started just two of City's eight Premier League games this season. With Phil Foden scoring three at the weekend and Jack Grealish coming into form, it is only going to get harder for the Algerian winger to regain his place in the team.

"He knows [what he needs to do]," said Guardiola. "I know Riyad perfectly. We need him, he has to come back to his best and at his best Riyad in terms of personality, quality, ability, his love for this game how he enjoys to play. Step by step, he's going to come back."
