People are just finding out the real meaning behind Gangnam Style song
Gangnam Style became a global sensation in 2012. However, many K-pop fans remain clueless about the song's actual meaning.
The song, by South Korean singer and rapper Psy, was initially uploaded on Psy's YouTube channel before it debuted at number one on South Korea's Gaon Charts.
In August 2021, the song and its accompanying music video went viral, peaking at number two on the US's Billboard Hot 100 and topping music charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Its music video also became a "cultural phenomenon", winning Best Video at the MTV Europe Music Awards that year. Despite its popularity, many music enthusiasts are still unsure about the song's meaning. One Reddit user asked: "What is the story behind PSY's Gangnam Style and where can I find good information on it?"
According to Psy, the song pays tribute to the women of Gangnam, Seoul's wealthiest district. He explained in an interview: "Gangnam is a territory in Seoul, Korea. I describe it as noble at the daytime and going crazy at the night time. I compare ladies to the territory.
"So - noble at the daytime, going crazy at the night time - and the lyric says I am the right guy for the lady who is like that."
Some believe the song also satires those living in Gangnam, with one Reddit user commenting: "Gangnam Style is a satire about the wealthy/faux-wealthy people walking around Gangnam.
"I think it blew up partly because of how relatable it was as a social commentary, not just in Seoul but also in many cities where there is a huge class divide."
Another user chimed in: "When Gangnam Style came out, people loved weird, fun, EDM-heavy songs. They were used as memes a lot back then. For example, 'What does the fox say? ' came out
