Pedrie Wannenburg: Ulster Rugby pay tribute to former flanker after death in USA crash

Tributes have been paid to a former Ulster Rugby player who died in a car crash in the USA.

Pedrie Wannenburg, former flanker for Ulster Rugby, was fatally injured in the multi-vehicle collision in Texas on Friday.

The former Springbok rugby player, along with his son Francois, was flown to hospital but later died of his injuries.

His son is reported to be undergoing treatment, while wife Evette and daughter Isabelle escaped serious injury.

The 41-year-old, who played 20 times for South Africa, was a rugby coach for Austin Elite in the North American Major League Rugby competition. He initially moved to the US some years ago while still playing.

He's previously represented the Bulls, becoming a legend at the club, and also played for Ulster and Castres.

In a statement on social media, Ulster Rugby said: "Ulster Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of former flanker, Pedrie Wannenburg following a car crash in Texas.

"The Springbok played a major role in Ulster’s Heineken Cup and Pro12 campaigns, making 54 appearances for the Ulster men between 2010 and 2012.

"Our thoughts are with his wife, daughter, and son, who we hope pulls through and makes a full recovery."

Former Ulster team-mate Stephen Ferris said: "Extremely sad news to wake up to this morning. Former team mate at Ulster, Pedrie Wannenburg, has tragically passed away in a car accident. Pedrie was a legend of the game and one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Thoughts are with his wife Evette and his young kids."

A Bulls statement read: "We are devastated at the passing of Vodacom Bulls legend Pedrie Wannenburg. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Wannenburg family."
