Paul Waring wins Abu Dhabi Championship as Irish trio falls short
England's Paul Waring held on to claim a two-shot victory at the Abu Dhabi Championship, with Rory McIlroy finishing three shots back in a tie for third.
Overnight leader Waring's final round 66 which left him on 24 under overall, was enough to see him fend off the challenge of compatriot Tyrrell Hatton who carded a 64 on Sunday to end up two strokes shy of the summit.
McIlroy shot his strongest round of the tournament, carding a 64 that left him tied for third with Matt Wallace and Thorbjoern Olesen on 21 under.
The Holywood golfer's eight-under round featured just one bogey on the seventh hole with nine birdies keeping him in contention on a day of low scoring.
FINAL LEADERBOARD
Shane Lowry, who had fired himself into the mix after a third-round 66 on Saturday, was within striking distance of Waring with five holes to go but three bogeys on 14, 17 and 18 saw him slip out of the top ten and into a tie for 13th on 18 under after a 69.
Tom McKibbin finished one shot ahead of the Offaly man in a three-way tie for 10th after a strong final round.
The Antrim native's only blemishes came with bogeys on one and 16, otherwise his high point was an eagle on the par-5 second, accompanied by eight birdies in a round of 64.
