Paul Scholes tips Steve McClaren to take up integral Man Utd position under Ten Hag this summer

Paul Scholes reckons Erik ten Hag will need help with transfers if he is to turn Manchester United around – and Steve McClaren could be the man to fill that position.

Ten Hag will replace Ralf Rangnick as Manchester United boss this summer. Rangnick will begin a two-year consultancy role at Old Trafford. However, there are concerns over how much influence he will have after agreeing to become Austria’s new head coach as well.

Ten Hag will have former England boss McClaren and Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag either side of him on the training pitch.

But given McClaren’s history as a technical director, most recently with Derby County, Scholes thinks the 61-year-old could perform a role between Ten Hag and Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold.

“This manager needs backing now, he’s been brought into the club to really turn it around,” Scholes said (via the Daily Mirror).

“The only issue is, who’s going to be helping him on that side of the business? I know at Ajax he had Edwin (van der Sar) and Marc Overmars. He’s always had someone to help him.

“I don’t see that role at United now. I don’t know who’s going to do that. There isn’t that link between him and Richard Arnold, or whoever’s running the club. I think he will need help.

“Possibly, Steve McClaren could be doing that. Steve as I know was a fantastic coach, one of the best coaches I’ve ever had.

“But I don’t think he’s coached for a while now. He’s more into the director of football role I suppose with Derby County.

“Whether he takes that role on as well to help him with the signing of players, I think we have to wait and see.”
