Paul Scholes proven right over England plea and says who must play in Euro 2024 KO games

Paul Scholes was proven right after calling for Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer to feature for England at Euro 2024.

The Manchester United legend had a positive perspective on England's lacklustre 0-0 draw with Slovenia, while also hinting at his preferred lineup for the knockout stages of Euro 2024, reports the Express.

Despite a performance that left fans wanting more from Gareth Southgate's talent-laden squad in Germany, England managed to top Group C with five points.

Scholes, 49, took to Instagram to express his thoughts: "Might surprise a few, very encouraged by that performance, at some point during that game the right players were on the pitch at the same time... think this team is ready to click."

His comments came after the introduction of young talents Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer, which seemed to inject some much-needed dynamism into the team. The ex-England midfield has been vocal in his support for 19-year-old Mainoo, as he criticised Southgate's choice to start Conor Gallagher over the Manchester United prodigy in the stalemate with Slovenia.

He argued on Instagram that the Three Lions boss should value intelligence over mere energy: "Why are we obsessed with energy when we should be obsessed with the brain". Before Mainoo's impressive 45-minute appearance on Tuesday (June 25), Scholes had compared the young midfielder to renowned players like Toni Kroos and Rodri, suggesting that Mainoo could be set to partner with Declan Rice in England's upcoming knockout game.
