Paul Scholes points to Man Utd silver lining despite digging out Raphael Varane and labelling another Old Trafford star ‘a disgrace’

Paul Scholes has not spoken too kindly about two Manchester United stars after the club statistically endured their worst ever Premier League campaign, although he did offer some hope for the future.

The Red Devils legend believes Raphael Varane ‘got away with it’ after his injury-hit season at Old Trafford. However, Scholes was much more scathing of United forward Edinson Cavani, who he labelled a ‘disgrace’.

Cavani’s contract with United is due to expire next month, with the Uruguay international set to leave the club on a free.

The 35-year-old has hardly featured this season. He started just seven games in the Premier League and only scored two goals in 20 total appearances.

Varane, meanwhile, has had several injury issues since his high-profile switch from Real Madrid last summer.

The 29-year-old started 20 of the club’s 38 Premier League outings, as United struggled under first Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick.

And following Erik ten Hag’s arrival this week, Scholes has urged his old club to back the Dutchman.

He told Premier League Productions: “It’ll be interesting to see how many go. Obviously Paul [Pogba] is out of contract, Jesse [Lingard] is out of contract as well. It’ll be interesting to see how many he’d like to change, I think there’d be quite a few.

“I still think there’s a nucleus of some really good players, there are some good, young talented players in that squad.

“We were thinking nine months ago we were all talking about them challenging for the league. We were definitely a little bit wrong with that.

“But there is a really good group of players there, I’m sure there is. Two, three, maybe four additions in with real quality coming into the squad that he needs.
