Paul Scholes names three 'leaders' in Man United squad and gives verdict on captaincy decision

Paul Scholes says Erik ten Hag made the right call in naming Bruno Fernandes as the new Manchester United captain, claiming the Portugal international, Casemiro and Raphael Varane are all great leaders.

Fernandes was the on-field captain when Harry Maguire was out of the side last season, and took the armband for the majority of matches. Ten Hag described the playmaker as having a “very good personality” and is a “character” in the team, having been a consistent performer for United since his January 2020 arrival.

Fernandes has the astonishing record of never missing a United game through injury and has been an ever-present in the side. The 28-year-old has sometimes been criticised for his on-field gesticulations but is nevertheless seen as a leader by those around the club.

Scholes says United have a number of leaders in the squad, although admitted he doesn’t see Marcus Rashford as a skipper when explaining why Fernandes was a good fit for the role.

Speaking to YouTube show FIVE, Scholes said: “I know when Harry lost his captaincy, people were talking about Marcus being [the next one] - I never saw that. Look, I don’t know him in the dressing room but he wouldn’t be someone who strikes me as being a captain.

“Whereas Bruno has done it, hasn’t he? I think now for the first time, there’s quite a few leaders in the team. You think of the experience they’ve got, with the manager they’ve brought in. [Raphael] Varane, a World Cup winner, Real Madrid. Casemiro.

“All of a sudden there are three or four players in that team who are capable of being captain, and I think Bruno is probably the right choice because he seems to be the one they all look up to.
