Paul Scholes makes controversial Kylian Mbappe claim in comparison to Man City's Erling Haaland

Paul Scholes has explained why he thinks Kylian Mbappe will become the best footballer in the world ahead of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland's start at City has been nothing short of superb, with the Norwegian having already scoring 14 goals in 10 competitive matches since signing from Borussia Dortmund. His latest came last Saturday when he grabbed the Blues' second in a 3-0 victory at Wolves.

Mbappe meanwhile has started the season in a similarly dominant manner at PSG. The pacey Frenchman has 10 goals to his name in all competitions this campaign and is showing no signs of slowing down.

With both men being of a similar age, comparisons between the two have been rife with many considering the battle between the pair to be the next generation's version of Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi. When asked by Gary Neville who the best young footballer in the world will be, Scholes leaned towards the Frenchman.

"I would yes [choose Mbappe]," Scholes told Neville, who favours Haaland, on The Overlap. "I think there is more to his game, he is not just an out-and-out centre forward is he?

"He can go wide, he can dribble past people, he is quick, he can play one-twos. Haaland, look Haaland is f****** amazing don't get me wrong but he is a goalscorer."

When Neville suggested that Haaland would get more goals in a side featuring Scholes than Mbappe would, Scholes cheekily responded: "Yeah but that wasn't the question was it? I agree with you, I loved playing with Ruud [van Nistelrooy] and that type of player."
