Paul Scholes responds to Antony’s celebration after Manchester United beat Everton

Paul Scholes may need to rethink his verdict on Antony after Manchester United’s £85 million signing scored in the 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday.

Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis

Last week, Scholes described Antony as a ‘one-trick pony’ following the Brazilian’s subdued display in United’s 3-2 victory over Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League.

‘Sancho never really runs in behind,’ Scholes said. ‘He needs a fast left-back really or a centre forward to link up with and he hasn’t really got that at the moment.

‘Antony on the other side as well, he doesn’t run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony.

‘He’s always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You’re thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It’s still early days for him, we know that.’

But after scoring United’s equaliser against Everton, Antony appeared to send a message to Scholes and his critics by putting his finger up towards his mouth.

After being sent a picture of Antony’s celebration on Instagram, Scholes then shared it to his followers along with the caption: ‘whoops!’

Speaking after United’s win at Goodison Park, Erik ten Hag described Antony’s performance as the best since he arrived from Ajax.

‘I was quite [confident] that he could straight away have an impact, and in the first games he has had his good moments, he had his bad moments, but I think today he played his best game so far,’ said Ten Hag.
