Paul Robinson says ‘poor’ Lascelles is ‘not good enough’

Jamaal Lascelles has an uncertain future at St James’ Park. The 28-year-old is Newcastle United’s club captain but lost his place under Eddie Howe and has only started one of the Magpies’ last seven Premier League games.

Lascelles has found himself an unused substitute in four of Newcastle’s previous six league outings as Howe has preferred new-boy Dan Burn alongside Fabian Schar at centre-back.

And with Newcastle expected to sign another defender over the summer, the writing may be on the wall for Lascelles. Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez are out of favour in the North-East and might soon be made available for sale, but Paul Robinson believes Lascelles could join them through the exit door.

He told Football Insider: “Lascelles is on borrowed time at Newcastle. The backline is something that has needed to be addressed there for a long time. That was one of the main reasons they were struggling at the bottom of the Premier League. Defensively, they were poor. The players quite simply weren’t good enough.”

The 28-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle this season, scoring one goal. He’s suffered two own goals, has failed to make a tackle in five of his last seven outings, has committed five fouls in four of his last five league starts and has failed to complete more than 58% of his passes in five of his previous six games.

Newcastle have conceded only five goals from their last seven games and Lascelles has started just once in that time, so it doesn’t appear Eddie Howe needs him anymore.
