Paul Robinson gives Aston Villa hope in their pursuit of Bassey

With Matt Targett expected to leave Aston Villa this summer, Steven Gerrard needs another left-back as competition for Lucas Digne next season. The 41-year-old would love to bring Calvin Bassey to Villa Park, but Rangers are keen to keep him at Ibrox and have requested £25m if they are to let him go.

Villa have a more fervent need to strengthen in midfield and attack, so signing Bassey may not be a priority. Paul Robinson believes Rangers are planning for his departure, however, as they’re on the hunt for another left-back themselves.

He told Football Insider: “Rangers are blessed with two quality players in the left-back position. If they are looking to sign another one, alarm bells are ringing. You immediately think one of them is going to leave. Bassey is one that Steven Gerrard wants. He has had that working relationship with him before and knows just how good he is.”

Bassey joined Rangers on a four-year deal from Leicester City and has made 65 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with six assists. The Nigerian international played in 28 games for the Gers under Gerrard, scoring one goal with three assists, so he might be keen to renew acquaintances.

If signed, it remains to be seen what Bassey’s role in the squad would be next season with Digne there. The 21-year-old surely wouldn’t make the switch to sit on the bench, but he’d have Tyrone Mings for competition at left centre-back too so opportunities might be few and far between.
