Paul Pogba question will test Ralf Rangnick's new look formation at Manchester United

When Ralf Rangnick was first appointed interim manager at Manchester United, it seemed that the German manager would stick with his regimented 4-2-2-2 system that he deployed while he was in the dugout at RB Leipzig.

But with the players at his disposal, the formation and tactics didn't take hold, so Rangnick was forced to adapt, first with a classic 4-4-2, which then evolved into a 4-3-3.

The 4-3-3 seems to be the formation that the German has settled on for now with this United squad, and it has been successful against the likes of West Ham United and Brentford; as for large spells, United seem to have been controlling the game efficiently.

However, now Rangnick has another problem to solve, and it is one that his predecessor was unable to figure out, and that is how do you work Paul Pogba into this United team.

On his day, Pogba is one of United's best players. His range of passing is unmatched in the squad, and he can cut apart opposing defences with a single ball, but when played in a pivot or a three-man-midfield in the past, he has struggled in certain games.

Before his injury at the start of the season, Solskjaer had deployed Pogba on the left-wing, giving him more space to operate and taking a lot of the pressure off him to contribute to the team defensively. This had seen him come undone when he was played in the pivot.

And Pogba thrived in his few games, registering seven assists, and he is still near the top of the Premier League's charts for this. Still, with the emergence of Anthony Elanga, it is likely that at least initially, Rangnick will try to use him as a number eight in the midfield three.
