Paul O'Grady's tragic last moments with dog and husband's desperate efforts to save him revealed a year on from death

Paul O'Grady's beloved dog cuddled into the star's shoulder as his devoted husband tried to save him. Their home, nestled in the lovely Kent countryside, used to be filled with laughter. But now, it's quiet, with only the gentle ticking of clocks breaking the silence.

Andre Portasio is still adjusting to the big gap left by the passing of his dear husband Paul O'Grady. Just last week, he became emotional while sorting some of the TV star's clothes for donation to the Salvation Army.

"Suddenly, you start remembering where we were, and what we were doing together," he shares. "It reminded me just how lucky I was to have had him in my life," he added to the the Mirror.

Thursday (March 28) marks one year since Paul's sudden passing from cardiac arrhythmia at 67, ending his and Andre's 18-year love story. The event of that day is still so fresh in Andre's mind that he couldn't bear to stay in the same house and has headed to New Zealand.

"I wanted to be as far away from it as possible in New Zealand," he said. "I don't want to be anywhere near my kitchen where I found him, and be reminded of what happened." Touchingly though, he will carry Paul's passport with him on the trip. "It will feel like he's coming with me anyway, which is what he would have loved as he couldn't do long-haul flights as he got older," he said. "But he would have loved New Zealand, and on the day of my journey, I will remember him quietly in my own way."
