When it comes to former Arsenal players, Paul Merson is never shy in putting the boot into north London rivals Tottenham.

And Saturday was no different.

The Gunners legend is a mainstay of Sky Sports' flagship Soccer Saturday programme and is never shy in giving his opinions on the goings on at the respective north London clubs.

Merson played more than 400 games for Arsenal during a 12-year spell with the club, winning the league twice, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup.

And when asked about Alexandre Lacazette's contribution to Arsenal this season,. in the wake of missing a number of gilt-edged chances, namely against Burnley and Wolves, Merson opened up on the Frenchman's role and the fact he had been given the captain's armband.

He said: "I am a fan of his but it's bits and pieces, they need someone more consistent.

"I like him, he could end up getting eight goals before the end of the season, but I wouldn't have made him captain. His contract's up at the end of the season. Ben White or [Kieran] Tierney captain for me."

That led fellow pundit Clinton Morrison to say: "Or Ramsdale."

But Merson was having none of it.

"No not a goalkeeper," he said.

And when Morrison suggested that Arsenal's north London rivals have a goalkeeper as a captain - France's World Cup-winning goalkeeper-captain as well, Merson aimed a brutal dig at Spurs.
