Paul Bamba dies at 35 just days after calling out Jake Paul for boxing fight
World boxing has been left in mourning after the sudden passing of champion Paul Bamba at the age of 35. Only last weekend, Bamba claimed the WBA Gold Cruiserweight world title in New Jersey against Rogelio Medina, notching up his 14th knockout in 2024 – surpassing a previous record held by Mike Tyson.
The American-Puerto Rican had an impressive 19-3 career record and had recently called out Jake Paul following his victory over Medina. However, tragedy struck when just six days later Bamba was found dead.
Managed by pop star Ne-Yo, who recently entered boxing management, Bamba's death has sent ripples of shock across the sport in the States. In a statement confirming the sombre news, Ne-Yo alongside Bamba's family said: "It is with profound sorrow that we announced the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives.
"He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination."
Bamba's loved ones have called for privacy as they grieve, expressing heartbreak over his untimely departure: "We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief"
Under the wing of coach Malik Scott, husband to CBS Sports presenter Kate Abdo, Bamba had been down to fight Tommy Fury in November 2022 prior to the cancellation of the match, reports the Mirror.
In an incredibly active year, Bamba fought in every month of 2024 except for September, sometimes facing multiple opponents within the same month. On Christmas Day, he took to Instagram
