Patrick Vieira cools Jesse Marsch tensions as old MLS rivals prepare for Crystal Palace vs Leeds

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira will reignite his rivalry with American coach Jesse Marsch on Monday night when Leeds United visit Selhurst Park.

The two coaches locked horns on several occasions while both operating in the MLS, with Vieira in charge of New York City and Marsch in charge of local rivals New York Red Bulls. The duo had a number of fiery clashes together in opposite dugouts, with one particular match in 2016 seeing Vieira sent off and refuse to shake Marsch’s hand after a 4-1 defeat.

The current Leeds boss, who replaced Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road in February, spoke in the game about a perceived lack of sportsmanship from New York City players Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo. He was later fined for the comments after bringing the integrity of the competition into question.

At full-time in the match, Vieira was spotted confronting Marsch on the field as the players made their way back down to the tunnel. When asked what he had said to the American coach, Vieira said at the time: "The conversation to Jesse was just to stop crying and stop complaining. His team was playing well, playing really good, but it was quite really frustrating, and I feel sorry for him."

Now, ahead of the first Premier League meeting between the two at Selhurst Park, Vieira has insisted there is nothing but respect between the pair of managers. He said: "We had some challenging games. There was a derby in the MLS, and I look forward to seeing him again, we have really good respect and relationship."
