Parnell proud of Proteas season as he looks to end WP title drought

Proteas all-rounder Wayne Parnell says he is proud of his year and hopes to end it off on a high with One Day Cup glory for Western Province on Thursday.

Parnell had made a prominent return this year, playing in three ODIs (three wickets and scored 16 runs) and 13 T20Is (16 wickets and 54 runs), which included being part of the Proteas' T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.

He became the Proteas' all-rounder of choice in the T20Is following Dwaine Pretorius' injury, and Parnell is delighted to have featured for the national side after a near five-year international drought.

Parnell made a welcome return to the T20 set-up for the first time since 2017, and went on to play his 50th T20I at the T20 World Cup.

In August, Parnell took his first five-wicket haul against Ireland, ending on five for 30 in the Proteas' 44-run T20 win in Bristol.

Parnell deems his year as great as he cemented his spot in the squad but knew it'd been a tough year for the Proteas.

"Obviously, really pleasing to be back in the national team and going to the World Cup was really special, but at the end of the day, we didn't have much to show for it," Parnell told News24 at the T20 Women's World Cup Trophy Tour last week.

"Personally, I'm very proud of what I've done this year, but I know that I still have a lot to work on."

Parnell is looking forward to a jam-packed 2023 as he will captain the Pretoria Capitals in the inaugural SA20, but he'll also like to help the Proteas potentially qualify for the Cricket World Cup in India.

"I understand that we can get better. That's certainly been my sort of outlook and my mindset is really one of trying to improve every single day," said Parnell.
