Paris 2024: Ofili places 6th in women’s 200m final

It was a disappointing outing for Team Nigeria in the women’s 200 metres final of the Paris Olympic Games on Tuesday as Favour Ofili’s missed out on a podium finish.

Running in lane nine, the 21-year-old finished in sixth place in a time of 22.24 seconds, which was not enough to land her a medal.

Gabrielle Thomas of the United States won the gold medal, the silver medal went to Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, who won the women’s 100m final, in while Brittany Brown of the USA got the bronze.

In wrestling, it was another heartbreak for Team Nigeria following Blessing Oborududu’s defeat in the bronze medal bout.

Fighting in the 68kg event, Oborududu lost 3-0 (Victory on Points) to Japan’s Nonoka Ozaki.

Oborududu could not reenact her feat in Tokyo 2020 where she won silver for Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Samuel Ogazi, has become the first Nigerian male quarter miler to make the 400m final at the Olympics since Innocent Egbunike at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Ogazi kept his composure despite competing against top stars like Michael Norman of the USA and Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain.

He nearly caught Norman in the last few metres to finish third with a huge personal best of 44.41 seconds securing the final spot among the non-automatic qualifiers.

Hudson Smith dominated the race with a time of 44.07 seconds while Norman placed second in 44.26 seconds.
