Paris 2024: Focus shifts to Amusan as Brume fails in Long Jump

Team Nigeria’s hope for a medal has shifted to Tobi Amusan in the 100m hurdles at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics as long jumper, Ese Brume came short of making history after finishing fifth in the final with her 6.70m fourth round jump.

For the 28-year-old, it is now the second straight global event that she has finished outside the podium after she was beaten to the bronze at the 2023 World Athletics Championships by Romanian, Alina Rotaru-Kottmann’s 6.88m last round leap, four centimeters more than the 6.84m the Nigerian had jumped in the second round and that put her in the bronze medal position with the final round of jumps left.

Needing to jump more than 6.96m to put herself back in contention with just one final round remaining, the Nigerian could only repeat her 6.70m fourth round jump to confirm her fifth place.

Brume was aiming to become the first Nigerian in track and field to win two individual medals at the Games but she will now be content with being the second to win two individual medals at the World Athletics Championships in the same event after Blessing Okagbare who won in the 200m and long jump.

Two other Nigerians, Ruth Usoro and Prischila Ochonogor barely made up the numbers yesterday, finishing 10th and 12th respectively.
