Parents could end up homeschooling amid soaring fuel costs, warns MP

Parents could be forced into homeschooling because they can't afford the school run, an MP has warned. With the cost of petrol and diesel reaching record levels, the RAC says the cost of filling up a family car has now surpassed £90 for the first time.

It's for that reason Conservative MP Robert Halfon, who is chair of the education select committee, is warning that parents may soon not be able to afford to drive their children to school.

According to The Sun, he said parents are having to make the painful choice because fuel is 'unaffordable'.

He said: 'I have had constituents who have told me they have had to sleep in car parks overnight because they cannot afford to drive home.

"A mother has said to me she is thinking about home educating her child because of the cost of driving to school. It is the biggest cost for millions of people."

He is one of a number of MPs piling the pressure on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to slash fuel duty to help struggling families with what they describe as 'eye-watering' costs.

It comes as they are already dealing with price hikes in energy bills, and with food costs soaring too, it's warned that more and more people are facing the unfortunate prospect of having to choose between eating and heating.
