Paralympic wake-up call: Para ice hockey, cross-country medals wrap up Canada's push

After nine days of medals, podiums and records, sport action has come to an end at the Beijing Paralympics.

It wasn't too late for Canadian athletes to add to the country's medal count, earning one silver and one bronze in the final day of competition to push Canada to 25 medals (eight gold, six silver and 11 bronze) for third in the standings — and falling just three medals short of the 28 won in 2018.

Collin Cameron, Emily Young, Mark Arendz and Natalie Wilkie raced to bronze in the mixed cross-country relay with a time of 25 minutes 59.3 seconds.

Three of them made podium returns, while Young, of Kelowna, B.C., captured her first piece of hardware in Beijing to add to her PyeongChang 2018 silver and bronze honours.

Wilkie, of Salmon Arm, B.C., also grabbed two gold and one silver at these Games, while Arendz, of Hartsville, P.E.I., claimed a medal of each colour in Para biathlon in the Chinese capital. Bracebridge, Ont., native Cameron skied to two other bronzes during these Games.

The final piece of hardware for Team Canada, a silver medal, came in Para ice hockey.

Unfortunately for the team led by captain Tyler McGregor, the gold-medal game ended in a disappointing 5-0 loss to the U.S., which have claimed each of the last four Paralympic titles in the sport.

When Canada and the U.S. met in a preliminary round game to open the tournament, the game also ended in a 5-0 victory in favour of the Americans.

In between, Canada routed South Korea 6-0 in Group A action and 11-0 in a semifinal.
