Para swimming federation cautions athletes on doping
President of the Nigeria Para Swimming Federation, Amobi Chikwendu, has cautioned athletes against taking drugs to boost their performance, saying such acts can damage their career.
Chikwendu gave the admonition while addressing athletes and officials at the end of a two-day para-swimming trials held at the weekend at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
He said that the federation would not tolerate any act of doping, adding that any athlete found using performance enhancing drug will be banned even before he/she is sanctioned by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA).
Chikwendu, who was the immediate past president of Para Athletic Federation of Nigeria, described doping as an ill wind that blows no one any good, adding that it has destroyed the lives of many athletes and their promising career, hence, it must not be allowed to exist within the system.
He charged the federation’s coaches to be vigilant by monitoring the progress of their athletes from time to time, adding that they shouldn’t hesitate to report any negative development discovered.
Chikwendu commended the swimmers for attending the maiden trials in their large number, pledging that those who excelled would be picked to represent the country in future global events, including the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualifiers, subject to approval by Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
