Padraic Maher joins Cahill's management set-up in Tipp

Three-time All-Ireland winner Padraic Maher will join the Tipperary hurling management set-up as new boss Liam Cahill added three new members to his backroom team.

Cahill, who succeeded Colm Bonnar after the latter was abruptly removed from his post last week, had already appointed his regular sidekick Mikey Bevans as coach and has now added three more to his backroom team, including Maher, Loughmore-Castleiney's Declan Laffan and his former U20 selector TJ Ryan.

The 33-year-old Maher, a six-time All-Star and an influential figure on Tipperary's All-Ireland winning teams in 2010, 2016 and 2019, announced his surprise retirement at the beginning of 2022 due to a neck injury.

The decorated wing-back confirmed in a statement that he had taken the "heartbreaking" decision to retire on foot of medical advice that he should avoid contact sport as a result of a neck injury incurred in a club match.

Laffan guided his native club to a Tipperary title in 2013 and more recently managed Laois side Clough-Ballacolla to successive county championships in 2020 and 2021.

Ryan, meanwhile, was a key part of Cahill's All-Ireland winning management teams with Tipperary at minor and U20/21 level and previously guided his club Clonoulty-Rossmore to county finals in 2010 and 2011.
