Owen Coyle stunned his Rangers mantle stood so long as Motherwell hero relives day he stopped giant conga

Owen Coyle was glued to his television screen in India as Dan Casey finally stole his thunder and became the last Motherwell player to score a winner at Ibrox.

The Irish defender’s second half header at the weekend was enough to stun the Premiership leaders and give the Steelmen their first league win at Rangers in 27 years. Coyle was the last hero, when his double back in 1997 gave Alex McLeish’s side a famous win. The current Chennaiyin boss didn’t realise that Motherwell hadn’t won at Ibrox since until he heard the commentator on Saturday.

Coyle told Record Sport: “I genuinely can’t believe it is 27 years but we all know how strong Rangers and Celtic are, but you still don’t think Motherwell would have had to wait so long for a league victory at Ibrox. I mean Motherwell are an established Premiership club and have finished second and third in the league but even then those teams haven’t won at Ibrox.

“When the commentator said it was 27 years since Motherwell had won at Ibrox (in the top flight) I was really surprised. It just shows what a big result it was for Motherwell on Saturday. Hopefully, it won’t be another 27 years for somebody to emulate Dan Casey. If they do then I hope then they can emulate me with a double or maybe get the hat-trick!”

Coyle was delighted to see Motherwell beat Rangers but joked it wasn’t as big as their win in 1997 because the Steelmen needed to stave off relegation and the Light Blues were looking to start a nine-in-a-row party.

The former Well star, with a wry smile, joked: “Take the mantle? Yes, but he (Casey) only scored one! There also wasn’t the same pressure that was on our Motherwell team because we needed to win to stay out of the relegation play-off places.
