"Over the last few weeks..." - Journalist hints at "shock" Spurs exit for £30m star

Tottenham Hotspur ace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could be allowed to seal a ‘shock’ exit as he has become ‘less important’ in Antonio Conte’s system, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

Conte was appointed as Spurs’ head coach last November and the Italian may look to make sweeping changes to his squad when the summer transfer window opens for business.

According to the Express, Newcastle United are plotting a £30million move which would see Hojbjerg swap the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for St James’ Park.

The report suggests the 54-cap Denmark international is also wanted by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho at Roma and Hojbjerg could sanction his departure if a suitable offer is made as he wants to shake-up his own squad ahead of next season.

Hojbjerg has been with his current employers since August 2020, when a deal worth £15million plus bonuses saw him join from Southampton.

The 26-year-old’s £100,000-per-week contract still has more than three years to run, meaning Spurs are not in an immediate rush to sell the defensive midfielder and find themselves in the driving seat when it comes to negotiations with suitors.

Hojbjerg has chalked up 97 appearances since heading to north London, meaning he could bring up his century before the season reaches its climax.

Brown believes it would come as a surprise to many if Hojbjerg were to leave Tottenham in the summer.

However, the journalist also feels Hojbjerg is no longer a key component of Conte’s plans in north London, meaning there is a possibility that he could be among the big names to leave Spurs in the coming months.
