Ospreys reach URC play-offs after bonus point Judgement Day victory

The Ospreys secured a place in the United Rugby Championship play-offs for the first time since 2017 with a 33-29 bonus point victory over Cardiff.

At the start of the week the Ospreys were only given a 2% chance of reaching the play-offs but after other results went their way they did enough against a stubborn Cardiff side to book a clash with Munster in Limerick next weekend.

The Ospreys started the game strongly, turning down a kickable penalty to go for the corner. After a series of pick and goes they finally forced their way over the line with Nicky Smith powering over from short range.

Dan Edwards' conversion was successful but Cardiff were not prepared to give the Ospreys an easy ride. After working an overlap a lovely short pass from Tinus de Beer put Theo Cabango through a gap with the electric wing taking on his opposite number Keelan Giles on the outside before touching down with a terrific finish at the corner. De Beer converted but Cardiff and potentially Wales were dealt a hammer blow soon after when Cabango was helped off the field with a lower limb injury.

Wales star Jac Morgan charged forwards with a powerful carry before the ball was spun wide to Giles on the outside. The elusive win tried to dance his way past the Cardiff defence but he found his outside-half Edwards whose outrageous out of the back door offload put Tipuric over at the the far right-hand corner. Despite falling behind it didn't dampen Cardiff's spirit and the Ospreys were struggling to cope with their attack. Cardiff finally found the edge and young hooker Evan Lloyd made some headway before finding Thomas whose offload found Mason Grady for the try which meant both sides were level at 12-12 at the interval.
