Ospreys 37-18 Dragons: Home side prove too strong for visitors as Alun Wyn Jones leaves onlookers wondering

The home fires have flickered fitfully for the Ospreys of late, but Toby Booth’s side were able to warm the spirits of their supporters on a cold afternoon in Swansea.

They had way too much for the 14-man Dragons as they ran out victors by five tries to two in the United Rugby Championship encounter.

There were some strong performances from the home players, most notably from the official man-of-the-match, Morgan Morris, Alun Wyn Jones and centre Keiran Williams.

Jones left the field to a standing ovation on 71 minutes.

The 37-year old waved to the crowd as he made his exit and embraced Morris.

Given that it was the Ospreys’ last game in Swansea this season, we wondered whether it might be the old warrior’s last appearance at the Swansea.com Stadium. As he took his leave of events, plenty might have thought it.

His coach Toby Booth commented later that if it did prove his last home match, it was some way to bow out.

No-one could disagree.

Jones covered every blade of grass and then a bit more. There were multiple offloads, carries, tackles and trademark work in the tight. An alien strolling into the stadium might have assumed this son of Swansea was just starting out on his journey rather than nearing its end.

Doubtless, his situation will become clearer in the coming weeks.

There was no hint of an announcement before this game. But as he saluted the fans at the end, it seemed for all the world as if he was saying goodbye.

What a player he has been.

In front of Warren Gatland, what a game Morgan Morris had as well, with the No. 8 scoring a try and setting another up. He joined moves, started moves and finished moves.
