Oscar-nominated film dubbed 'best video game movie ever' to air on TV - where to watch

A popular sci-fi action comedy film is all set air on television, with fans of the movie being able to watch the 2021 motion picture again entirely for free.

Free Guy will air tonight (January 25) at 9.30pm on Channel 4 as well as an hour later at 10pm on Channel 4+1. For those who are unable to tune into it when it airs on TV, it will also subsequently be available to watch on streaming platform 4OD.

The Shawn Levy directorial stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howerty, Utkursh Ambudkar, Joe Keery and Taika Waititi. It tells the story of a bank teller who finds out he is a non-player character in a massive multiplayer online game.

He is partnered with another player and the pair must find evidence to prove that a gaming company's CEO has stolen the source code to the player's game.

The film unfortunately faced delays twice as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but after premiering at the 74th Locarno Film Festival, it released in cinemas.

Free Guy became a huge box office success, making $331.5 million worldwide from a budget between $100 to $125 million. It also garnered critical acclaim with reviewers praising the concept and comparing it to other incredible video games such as The Matrix and Fortnite.

Following the release, it went on to receive a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards.

The film has a 7.1 rating on IMDb from 453,000 reviews as well as a 80% Tomatometer rating and a 94% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
