Osaka, Muguruza and the biggest upsets of the French Open first-round

Last year’s French Open was perhaps the most unpredictable in recent memory and this season’s competition has already provided plenty of upsets. 

While there were dominant wins for world number one Iga Swiatek, fourth seed Maria Sakkari and rising US star Coco Gauff, other top names did not fare as well.

Osaka lost to Amanda Anisimova at the Australian Open and the American once again got the better of the Japanese star at Roland Garros. 

In truth, this was far from the biggest upset of the round. Anisimova is seeded 27th and has already had some impressive results in 2022. 

Meanwhile, Osaka has struggled on clay throughout her career and only recently returned from an Achilles injury. 

Muguruza is a former winner at Roland Garros, having claimed the title in 2016. However, the Spanish star fell to a three sets defeat against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. 

Kanepi turned professional more than 20 years ago and has reached the quarter-finals of every Slam in the past. 

Next up for the 36-year-old is Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. 

Krejcikova entered this tournament as the defending champion, having won her maiden Grand Slam singles title as an unseeded player last year. 

However, the Czech star has been plagued with injury problems of late and lost to France’s Diane Perry in three sets.

This early exit means that Krejcikova will drop outside of the world’s top 10. 

Kontaveit was seeded fifth for this year’s event but succumbed to a straight sets defeat against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. 

The Estonian has never reached beyond the fourth round at Roland Garros and her poor form at Roland Garros continues.
