Orla O'Dwyer first Irishwoman to make AFLW All-Australian selection

Tipperary dual star Orla O'Dwyer has become the first Irishwoman to be named an AFLW All-Australian, Aussie Rules' version of the All-Stars.

Last season, O'Dwyer became the second Irish AFLW Premiership winner - after Adelaide Crows' Ailish Considine - with the Brisbane Lions last season and she maintained her high standards this year to be named one of six midfielders on the selection announced at the W awards in Melbourne.

She averaged 14.4 disposals, 325.2 metres gained and 4.2 tackles per game in addition to kicking six goals.

O'Dwyer's team-mate Emily Bates was named 'Best and Fairest', effectively Player of the Year.

The Lions' title defence was ended in the preliminary final last weekend by Melbourne Demons, who had Dublin's Sinead Goldrick in their line-up.

Considine featured in the Crows' 40-26 win over Fremantle at the same stage and the two Irishwomen could go head to head in the final on Saturday (3.30am Irish time).

The sizeable Irish AFLW contingent (14 players) have been able to return home and represent their counties in the All-Ireland championships in recent years but a mooted August start to next season could mean hard choices ahead for some.
