Orla O'Dwyer and Jennifer Dunne help Brisbane Lions to AFLW glory

Tipperary's Orla O'Dwyer and Dublin's Jennifer Dunne helped Brisbane Lions to defeat North Melbourne by a score of 7.2 (44) to 4.3 (27), in the 2023 Australian Football League Women's Grand Final on Saturday.

The squads featured a total of four Irish players, with the Brisbane pair coming up Cork's Erika O'Shea and Tipperary's Niamh Martin, who were representing the Kangaroos.

After starring in the first preliminary final, Sydney-born O'Dwyer was pivotal again, kicking a clever snap to give Brisbane a 19-15 lead early in the third quarter.

North Melbourne regained the lead ahead of the fourth, before Brisbane roared back to win their second AFLW title.

O'Dwyer had been part of the Brisbane side which won the Grand Final in 2021 and the following year became the first Irishwoman to be included in the AFLW All-Australian, Aussie Rules' version of the All-Stars.

She is just the second Irish player to win multiple AFLW titles, after Clare's Ailish Considine, who won two with Adelaide Crows.

O'Dwyer was joined in the Australian city by Dunne back in the autumn, and the Dubliner is now the first player to win an AFLW title and an All-Ireland medal in the same year, having helped her county defeat Kerry at Croke Park back in August.
