Organising your fridge properly could help you save money on energy bills and food, says expert

Amid the cost of living crisis and April's energy price cap rise, many of us are looking for ways to save money around our home. Experts have now revealed that there is an effective way to organise your fridge to make your food last longer, helping you cut down the cost of your food bill and the price of your energy.

A home appliance insurance expert at Smart Cover says that the way you stack the contents of your fridge can have a big effect on how your appliance works, the cost of running it and how long your food lasts. Reducing how much of your food is going to waste can also be an big advantage for the environment.

Chris Beasley, Head of Operations for the insurance experts says the first step is to organise your fridge efficiently so that every item has a place.

“It may sound obvious but having a system when it comes to unloading your shopping is really effective. Being organised means you know where to find things and are less likely to have food that you’ve forgotten about languishing at the back of your fridge," Mr Beasley said.

“This means less food waste which is good for the environment and it’s better for your pocket because you’re not buying things you already have. Another rule of thumb is to avoid overfilling your fridge. Stacking stuff on top of each other will prevent air circulating between your goods and cold air getting everywhere that it needs to. This means your fridge has to work harder and your food will go off quicker.”
