Opinion: Will January signing feature for Celtic this season?

So far this season, every player that Celtic have signed in the January transfer window has featured for the first-time aside from Johnny Kenny, who joined the Bhoys from Sligo Rovers.

The 18-year-old striker scored for the Bhoys’ B team in the recent 5-0 Glasgow Cup win over Partick Thistle, and that will no doubt give the Celtic starlet plenty of confidence going forward.

Kenny’s chances of featuring for the Hoops first-team could well depend on both how fit he can stay, and how the situation is regarding Celtic’s first-team strikers.

You have to think that for the moment, Kenny will be staying in the Celtic B squad, as he gets used to playing for the Hoops. But if he can perform well for the B team, he could well make the first-team squad, like happened to his B team teammate Karamoko Dembele, who recently featured for the Bhoys against St Mirren.

As for the first-team strikers, at the moment Ange Postecoglou has Giorgos Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda available for selection. Kyogo is still out injured, and as he has been out since December, you have to imagine that Celtic will not want to rush the forward back.

If either Maeda or Giakoumakis get injured, then that could provide an opportunity for Kenny. That might be a gamble for Celtic, but as the player is a natural striker then it could be worth giving the starlet a chance to shine.

You never know how good a player is unless you give them a chance, that is what happened in recent years with the likes of Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor.

That would be the making of Kenny, imagine what a massive boost it would be for his career if he got into the Hoops side for a title run-in. Kenny surely won’t even be thinking about that yet, he will just be hoping to score more
