Opinion: Why released 31-year-old should opt for a move to Derby County this summer despite Championship interest

Conor Hourihane spent last season on loan with Sheffield United making 30 appearances in all competitions and contributing a goal. 

This summer he now finds himself without a club following his release from Aston Villa following the expiration of his contract.

The defender was initially tipped for a permanent move to Bramall Lane. However, he spoke out about his desire for consistent game time and admitted frustration at times not playing as often as he would like under Heckingbottom making it look unlikely.

Since, the Daily Mail have reported that Huddersfield Town, Luton Town and Derby County are all interested in the player meaning he approaches the new season with plenty of offers available to him.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Rams are in talks with the 31-year-old with the club now able to engage in transfer work following their takeover.

However, with the interest from the Championship, this could throw a spanner in the works.

You can understand why the defender may be tempted for a move back to the second tier considering that’s where he spent last season, especially with the potential offers being two sides that will be at the top of the league and pushing for promotion.

However, you have to question how much game time he would be getting in either of these sides.

Although he did well with the Blades last season, his loan spell wasn’t mind blowing therefore suggesting he could be a solid squad player but not necessarily a guaranteed in the starting 11.

Considering Hourihane made a point of wanting to be a core part of the side, this suggests why he would be best to opt for a move to Pride Park instead this summer.
