Opinion: Nottingham Forest should part ways with midfielder at the end of the season

Portugese player Cafu first joined Nottingham Forest in 2020 on loan from his parent club Olympiacos.

After making 15 appearances for his loan side, just four months into his spell Cafu made the move to Forest permanent and made a further 18 appearances that season.

However, this season he has been less in favour in Steve Cooper’s side and to date has made just six league appearances.

Despite not being named in the squad at all for the first ten fixtures of the season as a result of injuries and suspensions, he was called up to the squad and scored goal in a 4-1 victory against Swansea.

Despite his contributions, Cafu has not been favoured to hold down a place in the side. He most recently played at the end of February but only as a substitute from the 87th minute meaning he didn’t even get ten minutes under his belt.

Instead, Forest have chosen the services of 20-year-old James Garner, who’s on loan from Manchester United, and 24-year-old homegrown player Ryan Yates. Furthermore, Jack Colback has been putting in good performances for Cooper’s side meaning Cafu finds himself further down the pecking order.

As it stands, Nottingham Forest currently sit 10th in the league and five points off the play-off spots but with two games in hand. Cooper’s side are in pretty good form and with eleven games left to play, you won’t see him testing anything new for next season. Nottingham Forest have a job to do which means they will be sticking with the strongest line-ups they can.

Forest also have an FA Cup run to be looking at as well with a Quarter Final tie against Liverpool coming up at the end of the month.

As it stands, you only really see Cafu get a chance again before the season’s out if Cooper has to use him due to injuries
