Opinion: Could legendary Celtic duo team-up for a new challenge?
It has been a very newsworthy last 24 hours for two former Celtic legends. Firstly, former Hoops manager and captain Neil Lennon was appointed manager of Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.
Another Celtic legend, nine in a row skipper Scott Brown, is also in the news, as the Daily Record are reporting that the midfielder is in talks with Aberdeen about terminating his contract and retiring from football. Brown had a coaching role at Aberdeen, but with the recent exit of former manager Stephen Glass it seems that his time at Pittodrie is set to come to an end.
It will be interesting to see what Brown does now. He could go into punditry, he was part of the ITV team for the European Championships last summer. Or he could team up with his former manager Lennon and head to Cyprus as part of the former Hoops boss’ coaching staff.
It will be interesting to see who is on Lennon’s coaching staff at Nicosia, as his two assistants at Celtic last season, Gavin Strachan and John Kennedy, are still at Celtic.
Perhaps he will reunite with former Hoops coaches Johan Mjallby and Garry Parker, and there could be a reunion with Brown as well.
If Brown wants to continue his coaching career, teaming up with Lennon could be an ideal move for the former Celtic skipper. The duo know each other very well, and if Brown does well helping Lennon, it could lead to another coaching role somewhere down the line.
It is probably a smart move by Brown to retire, as at the age of 36 his best days are behind him, but what an incredible career he had, winning 10 titles with the Hoops, and leading the Bhoys to four consecutive domestic trebles, a feat that will likely never be equalled.
