Opinion: Can Celtic reach landmark Premiership goal tally?

Celtic‘s 7-0 win over St Johnstone was the Hoops’ biggest league win of the season, and indeed the club’s biggest a win over the Perth side by the same score line in August 2019.

The Hoops have now scored 78 goals in the Premiership this season, which is the most scored by any team in the league. The Bhoys have five league games left to play this season, and the first target will be to get as many points as possible to ensure that the league title is won.

Perhaps another target though will be to score 100 goals in the league by the end of the season. For that to happen, Celtic would need to score 22 goals in the last five games of the season, that is an average of 4.4 goals per game. That sounds like a tough ask, but then the Hoops did just score seven goals against St Johnstone.

The teams that the Hoops play after the split will provide a tougher test than St Johnstone, but when Celtic are at their best, they are more than capable of scoring at least four goals in a league game.

There is little to no chance of Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou thinking about the 100 goal target. He will only be thinking about getting the points over the next five league games that will clinch the title for the Bhoys.

If the current Celtic side manage to score a century of league goals this season, they will be in good company with some great Hoops teams of the last 20 years, and after the indifferent start to the season the
