One summer signing is immune from new Manchester United transfer strategy
Versatility will be the watchword when it comes to Manchester United transfers this summer, with an ability to play in multiple positions and understand tactical demands key to any new recruits arriving at Old Trafford.
United will seek to overhaul Ruben Amorim's squad in the first summer window under the Portuguese head coach, equipping him with the players required to fill the 3-4-2-1 system he has brought with him from Sporting.
Amorim has remained loyal to that shape and intends to continue to do so, but it's been evident across his first 26 games in charge that he doesn't currently have the players to make it work.
Patrick Dorgu is the only significant addition to the squad under Amorim. Arriving for £25million from Lecce in January, he has improved the balance of the team and offered a more attacking threat at wingback. The signing of the 20-year-old ticked several boxes for United in that the fee was relatively low, and his salary is also small by first-team standards.
That is a sign of things to come under Ineos, but United chief executive Omar Berrada has also outlined why versatility will be a key ingredient in the summer, playing down the need to fill holes in Amorim's system and stressing that the 40-year-old's tactical demands will eventually mean the system is less about the numbers in certain areas.
"The idea we have is to be able to bring in versatile players that can be adaptable to multiple systems," said Berrada. "And ultimately, Ruben himself has said it, it's not about the 3-4-3 tactical formation. It's about an idea, a concept of how he wants to see the team playing.
