Once-booming seaside town dubbed 'Manchester-on-Sea' now claimed to be 'disgusting'

Scathing reviews have dubbed a once-booming seaside town one of the country's worst.

Rhyl, in Denbighshire, north east Wales, was one of the UK's most popular resorts. However, it scored poorly in the Telegraph's latest Seaside Gentrification Index. It looks at 20 classic resorts to see how they've adapted, or not, over the past three decades from air quality to high streets.

Rhyl was given a brutal blow when it was summed up as having: “no past, no arts or entertainment, no fun”. In fact, it ranked so badly it received just five points out of 100 and placed the town at the bottom of the list. This is some 93 points below the top resort, St Ives in Cornwall, the Mirror reports.

The once-thriving town has been surprisingly described as “Blackpool after a neutron bomb”. But it never used to be this way. Rhyl was often noted as a quiet alternative to the more famous Blackpool and was an affordable getaway for families.

However, when many more began travelling abroad for their summer holidays, business started to dwindle and the town fell into disrepair. It has now been dubbed e 'Costa del Dole.'

Whilst iLiveHere, a scathing review platform, said Rhyl was 'Manchester-on-Sea' and dramatically said it was "one of the most disgusting seaside towns on Earth."

Visitors have also taken to TripAdvisor to detail their sorry stays in the town which has a population of just under 27,000 people.

One visitor commented: “My suitcase was packed by staff as I was 20mins late after paying late checkout. And half of it is missing!

“So many expensive clothes items. And they couldn't give two hoots and deny it. It is a DIVE with rude common louts
