Omari Patrick’s free agent status at Tranmere Rovers could revive Gillingham’s interest in the former Wrexham and Carlisle United player
Gillingham’s interest in winger Omari Patrick could come back into focus this summer as the player has become a free agent.
Patrick, 29, was on Gillingham’s radar in January and he’s now looking for a new club after Tranmere confirmed he was among a group of their players not being offered a new deal.
Tranmere narrowly avoided relegation from League Two and are currently in the process of appointing a new manager. Pete Wild has been released after his short-term stint as interim boss.
Omari is one of 12 players not to have been offered a new contract and a club statement said: “Following discussions with the club's football staff, at this point [the players] whose current contracts expire this summer will not be offered new deals.”
Gillingham were understood to have shown interest in Patrick earlier this season, and were given the opportunity to take that further in January, but opted not to make a move for the player.
Patrick enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, scoring five goals in his first seven games. One of those goals came against the Gills in a 1-1 draw back in August.
That early-season form subsided and playing the wing-back role, rather than an out-and-out winger, led to the end of his goalscoring contributions.
He finished this season with seven goals and five assists, starting 32 games from his 36 appearances.
Patrick played non-league football before moving to Barnsley a decade ago. He never made a league appearance for them and signed for Bradford City, a spell that included loans at Yeovil Town and Wrexham.
Since then, he’s twice been signed by Carlisle United, in between playing at Burton Albion, and had a season at Sutton United before his move to Tranmere.
He scored 13 goals in the 2024/25 season
